Week 5 - Models and frameworks of digital technology
Week 5 Question.
Which of these models is the most useful for you at your stage in your teaching career and why? How could you apply it?
Response.
I have not yet begun my teaching career and am yet to do my practicum, so my views on this may change. Phillips (2016) advises that “there is no single theory or model” (p. 327) that can explain how teachers can successfully incorporate digital technology into their practice. With this in mind, the model which stands out most to me is the PATER Model as outlined by Marcovitz and Janiszewski (2016), which is a synthesis of several models for integrating digital technologies into teaching. Two elements of this model resonate with me; finding out what the purpose of your lesson is and reflecting on how the lesson went after it was delivered. Taylor et al., (2019) advise that teachers should identify the goal (or purpose) of a lesson when planning (pp. 208-209), ensuring that the lesson will meet the curriculum requirements. Marcovitz and Janiszewski (2016) suggest that teachers should endeavour to ensure that their use of technology meets their lesson purpose (p. 723). The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Education (2025) advises that “effective teachers continually reflect” on their practice. Reflection allows the teacher to improve their practice. Hence, the PATER model is reinforced by other requirements for teaching. Marcovitz and Janiszewski (2016) advise that reflection helps teachers build capacity for their next lesson (p. 725). This is something a pre-service teacher with little experience will need to do not only with integrating digital technology, but generally, with their practice.
e-portfolio task
As I have not begun teaching and am yet to do any practicum, I believe I am at the augmentation stage of the SMAR model. I have had many years using digital technology in the corporate sector, using various programs and used the internet since it's early days (my partner was an early employee at an internet service provider) I am comfortable with using the technology and am aware of the information available to students and how they can access it to utilise in their learning. What I am inexperienced with is teaching and using the technology for delivering lessons to students. I am unfamiliar with the many different collaborative platforms which students can use.
Refering to Blooms digital taxonomy I believe I am at the applying and analysing stage. I am yet to apply what I have learnt to a classroom context and will need to do so in order to analyse how effective my ideas are for student learning.
